I wonder how different the Civil War would have been if Lee would have found more allegiance to the nation than to Virginia.
It was a personal decision on his part that he did not take easily.
And anything that might be described as valor, patriotism or sense of duty on the part of Confederate participants in the Civil War should be treated just as that; a matter of personal or family heritage, and not as something to be honored by any public monument or on government property, save in a museum or at a historical site.
