What makes you think they know who “patient zero” was? Covid-19 looks like a variant of flu or a bad cold in most people — if they have symptoms at all. Surely it took a while to realize that this was something new.

I believe the Oxford vaccine that was the first to trial got there so quickly because they were just continuing work on a SARS vaccine that got stalled and the proteins they are targeting are practically the same between SARS and covid19.
