Yeah, at his age, it’s probably for the best. I remember when we had two aging feline overlords at our old house (they actually came with the house), and when the eldest died, we replaced him with a younger model. The two of them basically practiced a strategy of complete avoidance. When both of them were gone (the one of old age, the other presumably eaten by a coyote), my mom and dad got two from the same animal shelter that were roughly the same age. These two giant monster kitties are now inseparable.

The current plan is to let Elder FO run out the string and then probably pick up a pair of cats of similar age. Either kittens, or young shelter rescues. Will have to do some work on the apartment to handle agile cats beforehand at that point.
