It is not “ad hominem” to observe that Glenn Beck is a clown, it is an observation.

Not only that, Beck has famously described himself as a ‘rodeo clown’. So not only is not ad hominem (because it’s true observation) — it happens to be an epithet the subject has happily applied to himself.

Some people do not understand what ‘ad hominem’ means, just as some do not understand what a strawman argument is. They apply these terms to mean “using a term that’s mean” and “I want to ignore your argument and dismiss it as fallacious, but I have no idea what, if any, fallacy you might be committing.”
