He sold himself successfully as the “anti-politician” to enough people who were fed up with politicians and politics as usual. They are willing to let him get away with things that no professional politician could and even praise him for his approach.

And the GOP establishment of career politicians who made a pact with the devil when they nominated him has painted itself into a corner: they have to support him as their President.

Actually they don’t have to support him.

Like Nixon they could just take it on the chin in the next election (which looks increasingly likely) and retrench their politics.

They support him not because they are afraid of their voters. They support him because they want to support him.

It’s like when Michael Steele found out his party was full of racists at CPAC when CPAC’s own organiser said the mistake in hiring one of their most successful chairs was “he’s black.”
