re: #334 Hecuba’s daughter

Since the Civil War, the South successfully managed to keep the poor blacks and poor whites from uniting and supporting a progressive agenda. The current Republican approach of blaming the “others” for all of middle class and WWC ills seems to remain a successful policy. Unless we can counteract that, the future may be grim. We need a demagogue of our own who can truly unite Americans, or at least enough Americans to regain control of the government.

Unions. A huge number of problems people in the south actually have - not the made up ones - could be solved by allowing unions and giving them representation power. And it would reduce the need for a heavy federal government presence. But Southerners seem to be able to hold in their heads that unions are evil, businesses are good, and somehow companies allow people to have weekends out of the goodness of their corporate hearts.
