Urban renewal has a very long history - lots of history gets lost along the way. In NYC, Robert Moses used blight as excuse to demolish tenements that were integrated, and built apartment complexes that quickly became segregated. Or highways that ran through hearts of communities that didn’t have wherewithal to resist/block.

The current trend is largely to try and bring back these communities instead of demolishing the past.
