Take this wiretapping nonsense, for example - Trump ragetweets one morning on the shitter, making a wild accusation of felonious conduct by Obama, solely on the basis of a Breitbart article.

To defend himself, he’s damaged relations with two of our strongest allies; triggered a very public denial from the IC, along with the public confirmation of an FBI investigation into the campaigns ties with Russia; further destroyed whatever credibility Sean Spicer may have had left; destroyed any credibility HE may have had left; pushed Gorsuch’s hearing off the page; imperiled the GOP’s legislative agenda; and now, just to save Trumps standing with the stupidest of the base, made Nunes probably fall on his sword to get a headline for a day while likely triggering a independent commission to investigate.

Everything they do is built around salvaging the current news cycle from their own incompetence, at the expense of their own future. Trump has lied so blatantly about such easily debunked things when the lie gained him nothing that when the electronics ban in flights from the Middle East came out, the default assumption was that the claimed threat was bullshit. They’ve squandered their credibility, indeed the entire nation’s credibility, on Trump’s ego.
