My impression is that the GOP has not believed in representative democracy at least since Gingrich. They abandoned diversity as a positive value under Nixon’s Southern strategy. What is somewhat confusing to me is why the Republican billionaire class — Koch Bros, Mercers, Adelson, etc — are also aligned with Putin. I would have thought they would actually at least have some semblance of patriotism, but they don’t seem to care about this country either. Maybe it’s that Putin is one of their own — the richest man in the world through his grand theft and they admire him for his success in acquiring this wealth.

They don’t recognize any greater allegiance to anything other than themselves. When you are a billionaire, you are effectively an absolute monarch of your own little empire, a law unto themselves.
