It’s not gone at all. There are gazillions of Southern accents. Well, many. They are radically dissimilar, and they are dependent not only on region, but even more heavily on educational level and socio-economic class structure.
Hollywood almost always butchers them criminally. Kyra Sedgewick in The Closer, does a fair job, for a Yankee.
