From the thread downstairs that likened ‘Firefly’ to the confederate south fighting the union (which would make Mal a confederate). I disagree. According to to Joss Whedon the ‘central planets’ (or in the former analogy - the union) was actually an all power corporation that only wanted to help the rich (central planets). Those out on the fringes were not being cared for my the ‘corporation(s)’ thus they resisted the corporate overlords rule since they were only being used as items and not taken care of as people.

*spoiler alert*

From what I’ve read the direction of season 2 and 3 were more anti-corporate plots and drawing the idea that the central planet government was just large corporation that wanted to control all aspect of everyday life (thus the reavers and the story line that comes full circle in the movie as they are the byproduct of the attempt to control people through chemical means).
