This Japanese kanji means insect:

Its kunyomi (or Japanese, as opposed to Chinese onyomi) pronunciation is むし. Or “moo-shi”.

The mnemonic for remembering what the kanji means and how to pronounce it is “mush insect.” Your cartoon reminded me of that.
