I don’t see how Will & Grace is any different than Big Bang Theory is today? The relationship between the two main characters and others developed over the course of the show, even if few details carried over between episodes.

Any show that has a sustained run has to have developments like that - like Ross and Rachel or Chandler and Monica on Friends. So big themes might develop but it’s wholly different from a long term story told over several episodes. So if you look at a show like The Good Place or Vice Principals or even The Ranch, you can’t really just jump into season 2 without having seen season 1.
