Few automobiles in China over so many decades may be a blessing of a sort —not nearly so much urban sprawl as in US and much of the rest of the world.

Guess again. In Beijing alone, about 1500 cars are added to the streets every day, by one estimate. Chinese developers (with government support) are building huge satellite cities next to existing cities, that could become ghost cities if people can’t afford the new flats. The government is building out the nation’s highway system, a la the US Interstate system, too.

While there are few cars on those highways compared to the US Interstates now, within 10 years I expect they’ll be just as busy.
