Any show that has a sustained run has to have developments like that - like Ross and Rachel or Chandler and Monica on Friends. So big themes might develop but it’s wholly different from a long term story told over several episodes. So if you look at a show like The Good Place or Vice Principals or even The Ranch, you can’t really just jump into season 2 without having seen season 1.

OK. But back to your original point, I think Big Bang Theory fits into the episodic mold enough that it shows that not only can they survive, they can do well.

Where I see Will & Grace failing is that they were unique and groundbreaking. Now, we have a show that has the patriarch in his second marriage to a Latino, with a gay son who’s married and has an adopted daughter. I’m not sure how they overcome being normal.
