That is happening in a number of places; in Scotland, where my sister-in-law had to travel from Helensburgh into Glasgow, over 30 miles.
There is still a maternity ward in Bingen, Germany, but the intensive care ward for babies has been moved to Bad Kreuznach; only some ten miles away, but if there is a problem with the child, they only take the baby and leave the mother in Bingen…
The difference is that the “long distances” could be 150+ miles.
