RC is just so big that you can’t categorize it. They’ve got everything from crazy-assed medievalists to nuns that chain themselves to the security fences at nuke weapons sites. One of the best people in this town is an ancient nun who spends a bit of time on the bus. If you really internalize Catholic cosmology, and have the right personality, you wind up as one kind of fanatic or another.

I think one of my best friends had a bit of a crisis in faith when the child abuse scandals hit. I think the main reason he did not walk away from RC is his parents and in-laws.
