Das Boot is brilliant, but I could never get past the fact that all the characters were Nazis. I spent the movie hoping they’d lose every battle and be sunk.

Then you never really watched the movie. The Captain WASN’T a Nazi. Suggest you re-watch it and actually pay attention to his reactions when confronted with a actual Nazi supporter. His disdain is apparent. He was a professional military officer doing his duty. Much like many of our CURRENT military officers doing their duty under this (mal)administration.
