There was a place in DC called the Cellar Door. Sat 160, legally speaking, but I think they regularly pushed 200. (I’m sure there are Lizards who knew the place.) I must have seen close to 15 shows or more there — talk about intimate! It had a balcony, and the tables were no more than two rows deep on either floor — it was all stage. (Miles Davis’ Live/Evil was recorded there.)
Big names at teeny venues is a concept that doesn’t happen much anymore, sadly. The Cellar Door and Bayou and Desperadoes, all great DC clubs, are long gone, and they were unbelievable in their prime…..
