If you’re ever in a quake, seconds seem like minutes, and for anyone not used to them, I can’t express the abject terror that goes with it.
I was born and grew up in Los Angeles: been there, been through that*, and am quite content to leave it in the category of “unpleasant memory”.
*The 1971 Sylmar Quake (6.5-6.6). Wiki says it lasted 12 seconds: but yeah, it seemed like a LOT longer than that.
