That’s one of the reasons our prof. preferred the Virginia battlefields. They weren’t spoiled by tourism.

You can still see evidence of trenchlines in some places at Gettysburg, but they’re only just subtle, unnatural furrows now, rather than clearly apparent. Look North of the Pennsylvania monument, near the 1st Minnesota Volunteers monument.

When we lived back east I visited a few Civil War battlefields. I found ones like the Peach Orchard at Shiloh particularly sad because of the fact it is so ordinary and peaceful. Gettysburg suffers both from a lot of tourists and from the Victorian mania for monuments (which is understandable, but didn’t work for me.)
