I suspect that a major part of Biden’s attractiveness is the fact that he has been ‘vetted’. That is that he has shown repeatedly he will stay within the ‘rails’ of American Governance. In the face of the current administration, that will be important.

And, as several of the posters have pointed out, Biden has other ways to add the reassurance, beyond running as a candidate.

Personally, I’m hoping for one of the younger candidates to be the nominee. As has been pointed out, Biden’s long career has created a lot of policy positions that he can be attacked on, like his vote for the Iraq War and for DOMA. It may not be fair, but it’s politics. Plus I think since the Democratic coalition skews younger, a younger candidate can inspire more enthusiasm in the voters we need to get to the polls.
