But go to a gun range and try some!

I suggest a .22 l.r. for first shootings - than a bigger one.

Than try a automatic - or 2…3 to find out what you prefer. A Glock and a SigSauer in 9mm or .40 caliber?
Give a .38 revolver a shot. Its different but maybe more your thing.

Than a rifle….223 sounds ok - but .308 and 30-06 is nice too.
A M1 Garand is a nice weapon.

For house-defense: a shotgun. Caliber 12, Mossberg…Remington…
