So Jack was born in 1985, so he probably doesn’t know this since it didn’t happen in his life time and thus is from the age of pre-history, but… after this little historical event called World War II, the Soviet Union (as Russia was known then) invaded Ukraine and effectively operated it as a territory. The Soviets/Russians have always claimed a right to “the Ukraine” (adding “the” is a psychological ploy to establish the idea that Ukraine has never been independent).

Now, for the part that is very simple: the Ukrainian politician that Manafort did work for was a Russian loyalist. In fact, after he was removed from office, he ended up living in exile, in… wait for it… MOSCOW!
