Because there’s a difference between someone who drinks and someone who is an alcoholic. Alcoholism is an addiction and pretending that people with addictions are fine because they’re somehow “functional” (when that’s basically a euphemism for “not sloppy”) is not helpful.

Who is pretending that functional alcoholics are fine? It just means they are better at hiding their addiction. The word alcoholic is right there, but if I am dealing with someone who is an alcoholic but is really good at hiding it, that is useful information to know.
