re: #352 lawhawk

In the same week as the Newtown massacre, there was a guy who shot more than 50 rounds at a California shopping mall (his excuse was that this was his way of venting). No one was thankfully injured.

And for those who tout the Israel example of an armed populace, Israel has seen mass casualty terror attacks everywhere imaginable. Airports. Schools. Restaurants. Bars. Shopping malls.

Every public place is a potential target. Israel’s counter-terrorism and prevention are admirable, but not foolproof or impregnable. Israel’s solutions have involved checkpoints, security fences, etc., to disarm those that are intent upon carrying out those attacks.

Even our own experience in the US shows that public spaces are potential targets, not just schools and universities. We’ve repeatedly seen shopping malls targeted. Supermarkets. Churches/synagogues/mosques/temples.

During the High Holy Days, synagogues in the NYC metro area have police standing by in addition to the regular shul security staff because of the all-too-familiar terror threat. Do we really want that everywhere?

To be clear though, that guy in Cali wasn’t aiming at anyone. It’s lucky no one was hurt, but he doesn’t appear to have been a would-be murderer. He’s a jackass, not a shithead.
