To me this lovely song illustrates just how steeped in the Lost Cause southern culture really was, and still is in many respects. Williams seems to capture it all, “Hank and Tennessee” Williams, the tie in to fundamentalism, the picture of Stonewall Jackson, Thomas Wolfe, etc.
I suppose I post this to let neo-secessionists know that I do not reject their cause out of ignorance. I know the myth, and feel its appeal. It is still the work of the devil though.
