Beto should stick with flipping Texas. He would be of far more use in the senate right now.

Castro made the argument in an interview when he announced that he believes a Texas Democrat can do more to help flip the Texas by running for president than by running statewide.

There’s probably some merit to that in that Texas is traditionally a pretty low turnout state. It’s turnout was only about 51% in 2016 and somewhere around 46% in 2018 (and those are high turnout years). The idea being that coattails from a Texas Democrat at the presidential level could help down ballot candidates win.

I think the coattails theory actually works both ways, though. If you get good local and/or statewide candidates who can spend the time/resources necessary to do registration drives and GOTV at the local level, that can help higher up the ballot as well.
