Rather became famous as CBS White House correspondent during the Presidency of Lyndon Johnson. He and Johnson both were alumni of Southwest Texas State Teachers College, and Johnson liked him.

Rather also would fly to the site of natural disasters and hurricanes to report on the evening news. That was his gimmick.
