The reason for that is that Geraghty wants his readers to understand how they are perceived by others. Advocating a rape exception would shift the topic to the issue of abortion in-and-of-itself, which would would weaken the arguement to people who need to hear it.

I see where you are coming from, but that people need an _explanation_ why Rush’s Fluke remarks were beyond the pale, or why women might be ticked off at Akin and Mourdock, or why gay people might object to being likened to zoocrastics is disturbing.
