It’s hard to say, but I don’t think the slave owning class believed their own propaganda the way that today’s Republicans do. The slaver owners’ reality was that they would do anything to preserve and extend slavery. That’s evil, of course, but it’s not a dissociation from reality itself.

Of course they believed it, every word of it. They founded a whole religion on it. That’s where Southern Baptists came from.
