sort of. there are a lot of places with different answers. some seem to think that i should partition and format the drive first. idk

Which SATA ports on the motherboard do you have your drives hooked up to?

Look on the MB; hook your hard drive(s) up to any of the first four SATA ports (SATA_0 through SATA_3) and hook your CD/DVD drive(s) up on SATA_4 or SATA_5.

Then, boot into BIOS and go to the Integrated Peripherals tab and tell me what all of your SATA settings (OnChip SATA Type, OnChip SATA Port4/5 Type, OnChip SATA Port as ESP) are currently at.

I use Gigabyte boards, but I’m also reading your manual.
