Based on my experience leading wild-land firefighting crews, it’s not uncommon for some idiot to go off wandering around in the pucker-brush to answer a call of nature and never tell anyone where they were going.

Then there would have been far more POWs than just Bergdahl. Also, he left his weapons. Sorry, that doesn’t explain anything.
