Speaking of credit. The SiL (who is only 19) has been working and saving to buy a car. She’s managed to scrape together $8k and can buy one outright but I thought it might be best if she took out a small loan (using her cash as collateral) to build up a credit history. Went to the bank yesterday and found out they don’t do personal loans under $5k anymore, no car loans under $6k, and the dealership won’t give her financing because she only works part-time. How is she supposed to build up a credit history if they won’t even give her a loan backed with cash? I knew it was still tough to get banks to cough up money but this is silly.

Look into credit unions—they are probably a better deal anyway.
