You must admit, though, there is something very special about a British pub. The word itself is a diminution of “public house,” which is to say, a meeting place for the community. I’ve always preferred the open, friendly atmosphere of pubs, whether in the UK or elsewhere, to the dark, liquor-gulping, neo-speakeasy environment of stereotypical American bars.
Never have been in one I can only guess that you’re probably right. Nevertheless a liquor-gulping bar with a pool table is greatly missed.
