Previous allegations of neanderthal-sapiens interbreeding were hypotheses with conflicting evidence.
The truth is likely somewhat muddled. Species evolve in a population, and it is beginning to look like the development of sapiens in Africa was somewhat fuzzy, and it now looks like sapiens and neanderthal were not on their way to becoming totally separate before breeding folding genes back.
One thing that is now a serious question is if there were distinct populations of neanderthals, and that sapiens only interbred with certain groups. That will be a hard question to answer.
