Most of the state would be a desert except for the Colorado River compact and the irrigation canals built over the past century that irrigate the inland empire and reservoirs in places like Hetch Hetchy that feed into SFO.

Conserving water is an absolute priority not only in CA, but across the nation as water supplies are threatened by pollution (fracking) as well as droughts and climate change.

Reducing use also means lower cost to treat water for consumption and lower sewage costs.

You can get significant savings from going from 3gpf to 1.2gpf. Shorter showers. More efficient laundry.

It’s doable. How you get there is an open question - and how to do it when many are poor and can’t afford to upgrade to newer tech/appliances/fixtures.
