I sort of realized something a few years ago, and it made being a fan a lot easier. In modern pro sports, all things being equal, your team is only going to win once every 30 (or 32) years; you’ll get a trip to the finals every 15 or 16 years as well. Anything better than that is gravy.

Then again, I grew up in the LA area and the Lakers have won 10 titles in my 42 years (with 6 more trips to the finals), so I’m way ahead.

I’m spoiled in football- Steelers but cursed in baseball- Orioles so I’m able to appreciate good times and bad. The fans I hate the most are the ones who act like their team is some kind of failure if they don’t win it all every year. I mean yeah I get expectations are different when you’re a perennial contender but odds are odds after all. I was astonished that this is the first decade since the 1910’s with no Yankees in the WS. They’ve only won one WS since 2001 which astonishes me given how much wealth they’ve had. That said, they still do consistently make the playoffs. The argument shouldn’t be simply money buys championships.
