We look at alcoholism as a disease, but it may just be a symptom of a diseased society where people can’t cope without self-medicating.

I get where you’re going, but it is a legitimate disease with specific brain and body chemistry changes and a genetic component. If you’re interested, read, “Under the Influence,” by James Robert Milam. I did a ton of research into all of this over the years I spent dealing with the vast swath of alcoholics in my family.

But i definitely agree with you that society is struggling with self-medication. I think in terms of addictions, people start using those things to self-medicate, even using it as a social lubricant is self-medication, and then some people get a switch flipped in their brains and turn into addicts. I avoid alcohol because I know what is in my family’s past and I’m not going to push it.
