That article is crap. Beards are just a reaction to the previous clean-shaven era. There was even a ST:TNG episode where the guys were growing beards and Beverly Crusher tried to get them to shave.

Now, beards in the military are a different thing.

I started my beard while in the Navy in the early 1970s.
