That’s an excellent point that has been jingling around my noggin for a bit, but not was well put together. There’s this grotesque fetish to support the troops, just as the Citizens of Gilead say ‘Blessed Be’ to each other in passing among their daily rituals. But the military is composed a vast number of people who push pencils, the admin, all the tedium of daily life while never picking up a weapon. They’re asked to do this in other countries, or to move inside the country every 2-3 years in a ‘deployment’ where you have to uproot your family to move to the next base. Not glamorious or glorious, it’s the work. And they do it.

I see no difference between those servants in uniform and the others who wear suits or pantsuits, doing work they can or cannot talk to their family about, some of it serious, much of it tedious, but none the less important. It’s all work.
