Lee surrendered to Grant on this day at Appomattox Courthouse.

The US government had been occupying Lee’s home overlooking the Potomac River and DC. They started burying those US soldiers who died defending the Union around Lee’s home. In fact, the orders were given to make sure that the bodies were buried as close to the house as practical.

That laid the foundation for Arlington National Cemetery.

Start and lose a war of insurrection, and your home should be turned into a national cemetery.

And I can think of over 500K people that should be buried at the one in Florida.
