re: #321 Interesting Times

Don’t see Christie jumping, but he might as well get pushed if NJ gets screwed by the GOP over the reconstruction package and Christie’s sensible position on gun control and armed police/guards in schools.

As for the latter, Marlboro NJ is going ahead with a plan to put cops in all of its schools - from elementary to high school. The mayor and police department agreed upon this without any municipal ordinance, no debate, and no input from the public and pissed off the locals in the process. They’ve gone and subjected the town’s taxpayers to a permanent tax hike with no say - because that’s the only way that gets paid for is out of local taxation. So, even those who might have supported putting cops into the classrooms are up in arms because they had no say on how any of this would be paid for.

That’s what the police in every school means. Never mind that getting guns out of the hands of criminals before they could make it to a school makes more sense - and would be less costly. Better to get the criminal when they attempt to purchase the firearms than to try and apprehend them while attacking a school.

It’s a serious misallocation of limited resources. Just as with much of the counterterrorism theater at airports, the security at schools is going to be subject to the same kind of visual cues, even as the underlying problem persists.
