We have so many different kinds of really cool rocks here in Appalachia. I would never ever tell someone “that’s a rock”. Especially if it looks like a potato and it’s actually a geode.
Ah, but see, I have very little (read: no) training in mineral identification.
I tried to actively avoid minerals, actually. Minerals meant crystals which is kind of not what the goal is when you’re making glass.
So my rock identification skills are about the same as any average person’s, despite my supposed area of expertise. Now if you want to talk about how the temperature affects the structure of a aluminosilicate melt, that’s a different conversation…
