Those dudes are cray cray.

They’re creating a cover story in which everybody that disagrees with them is Ultimate Evil.

That’s not crazy, it’s an effective, if sociopathic, strategy—particularly if you’re setting up a justification for lots of people not getting rights (like, say, Putin is doing using social conservative themes).

It’s not that they’re geniuses, or that this is 4-D chess. But it doesn’t need to be 4-D chess. This is pogrom logic; the rhetorical style of every wife-beater ever. It’s time-tested.
