I’m remembering High School American History where Andrew Johnson was praised for binding up the nations wounds and Ulysses Grant was trashed for being totally corrupt.

Then in college I studied labor history under David Montgomery. His book “Beyond Equality: Labor and The Radical Republicans” shattered what I believed based on high school history. Johnson was shown to be a full blown racist who opposed organized labor while Grant defended Reconstruction and the labor movement. In high school we were never taught about the Force Acts or the KKKActs that Grant signed and was hell bent on enforcing.

Another fact that Montgomery taught was how Andrew Johnson was hell bent on executing Davis and Lee and only person who saved them from the gallows was Grant who pleaded with Johnson to spare their lives.
