This should really be dubbed the “Black Swan Election,” because it’s pretty obvious that nothing that’s happening was on anybody’s minds when gaming out how this was going to go last year. A year ago, the “very serious people” had Donny at even odds or better of winning reelection if the economy held up til November. On the list of events that would totally swing the odds of the election, I doubt “novel viral pandemic” was even in the top ten.

Exactly. This came out of nowhere and as far as most of the punditocracy was concerned, “pandemic” and “overnight economic meltdown” probably would’ve been right up there with “zombie apocalypse”.
