The standard is really less about spite than it is about unreasonable demand for purity. AS is saying the whistle should be blown when someone is suggesting that “anything other than a purely (fill in your political persuasion here) is a dastardly sell-out to the evil other faction(s)!”. That seems a proper frame of mind,

The right policy should be chosen because it’s right. That rarely correlates with purity, but if that means it’s 100% Democrat or 100% Republican, then so be it.

Purity is, in principle, wholly orthogonal to correctness.
