Or intentionally ignored by one side in this (religious people). Non-religious people are acutely aware of the distinction, particularly when churches start trying to do things like prohibit child adoptions to atheists, Jews, LGBT, &c because it violates their freedom of religion or something. When Christians tell you “you’re not really married” (that’s happened to my wife and me, and I’m sure that’s happened to a lot of LGBT people). When they use their power to ban people from hospitals they run because they don’t “agree with their lifestyle.”
