The first bit of the tradewar doesn’t need to cause a large amount of unemployment to have a big effect.

The total population of Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa and Kentucky, North and South Dakota is only 16 million people. Each ton of soybeans that China doesn’t buy from those states is about $300 dollars removed from those states economies.

Seeing as China is ordering tens of millions of tons of soybean from Brazil, that is billions of dollars per yearthat is going to go missing from those states economies.

However, even if unemployment reached 20% in those states, it would have only a very small effect on the national unemployment rate. But it would make running as a Republican in those states be quite a challenge.
